Overview
Established in 1962, the College Year in Athens, in association with the International Center for Hellenic and Mediterranean Studies, offers a program that takes advantage of the resources of Athens and Greece and invites students to expand their knowledge and understanding of Greece's fundamental contribution to the development of Western civilization. |
Academics
The College Year in Athens program focuses on Greece and the world of the Eastern Mediterranean from ancient times to the present. The curriculum is organized into two tracks: Ancient Greek Civilization and East Mediterranean Studies. Classes are taught in English and include archaeology, art history, classical languages, ethnography, history, literature, modern Greek, philosophy, political science, and religion. Many courses include field trips in Athens and the surrounding area. Courses are open to program participants only.
The approved courses for affiliated programs links you to a filtered Excel file listing courses that have already been approved by Hollins faculty for credit on each affiliated program. Other courses are subject to the normal credit approval process. Students generally enroll in four courses.
Other Program Features
- Full-time on-site staff
- One-week on-site orientation program
- Faculty-led guided trips to Crete, Delphi, Argolid, and/or northern Greece
- A lecture series each term featuring guest experts
- Organized activities including production of an ancient Greek tragedy, Greek cooking and dancing lessons, outdoor and sports activities

Housing & Meals
Students on the College Year in Athens live in student apartments with other program participants. The apartments are about twenty minutes' walk from the Academic Center and have two or three double rooms with shared common room, kitchen, and bath.
The program provides the main meal on weekdays. All other meals are the student's responsibility.

- CYA estimates that students should have about $800 to cover the cost of meals not provided by the program.

Eligibility
Minimum requirements are:
- Junior status
- Classical studies major or minor
- Cumulative and classical studies GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Two faculty recommendations, including one from a member of the classical studies faculty
- No major disciplinary infractions
Applicants are also evaluated on their academic and personal maturity, flexibility, and openness to new cultural experiences. Hollins recommends approved candidates to the College Year in Athens. CYA makes final admissions decisions.**
