New York City Art World (J-Term)

(Domestic J-Term)

Program Dates: January 2027 (exact dates TBD)

Have you ever wanted to visit the Big Apple? Join us on a trip to “the city that never sleeps”: New York! Home to the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Broadway and much more, NYC is also host to a vibrant art scene. NYC is a global hub for art, acting as a major center for the international art market through high-value sales at major auction houses including Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and Phillips. It is also the home to world-class museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim, and Museum of Modern Art. Over the course of the 20th century, NYC came to be recognized for its prominent role in the development of new artistic schools and styles as well as its rich cultural life. The city government supports the arts with a larger annual budget than the National Endowment for the Arts (the city transportation department even has its own art collection!) and the city boasts not only some of the most impressive displays of public art in the world but also a high number of museums and galleries (about 1,400 galleries and 70 museums) spread across its five boroughs.

Academic Focus: Over the course of two weeks, students will have the opportunity to visit both non-profit arts institutions like museums as well as commercial art spaces including galleries, auction houses, and a major international art fair. Students will meet professionals in the field and learn about the various job opportunities that exist in the art world while gaining a stronger appreciation for the ways in which art, culture, and the economy are linked. In addition to our planned art-based visits, trips will also be coordinated to popular tourist destinations such as Rockefeller Center and the High Line.
