January Term in Havana, Cuba

Each January, Hollins students are offered the option of an intensive 3 1/2-week Spanish language experience at The Center for Cross-Cultural Study in Havana. This 3 1/2 week term is designed to be taken on its own or as preparation for the Spring Semester Program.
If you can’t get away for a full semester, short-term programs are the best option. Intensive language courses are offered at intermediate and advanced levels, along with content courses in culture, history and literature.
SSA January term programs are all-inclusive programs and
may include sponsored excursions to places such as:
- Old Havana
- Museum of the Revolution
- farmers' markets
- grassroots community centers
- jazz, salsa and hip-hop concerts
- Cienfuegos province
- the colonial city of Trinidad
Academics
- Classes meet Monday through Friday for 4 hours per day
- Average class size: 10-12
- 4 semester credits (equivalent to a Hollins J-Term credit)
- All courses taught in Spanish by highly qualified Spanish university professors with extensive experience teaching American students
- Speaking partner program
Housing and Meals
Students are housed with a host family, with breakfasts and dinners included.
Eligibility:
Students accepted to the program must be in good academic and disciplinary standing and have Hollins' approval to participate.
- 3.0 in Spanish Language Coursework and completion of elementary-level Spanish
- Content courses require at least 4 semesters of college-level Spanish.
Cost
The cost for the program is approximately $4,960 and includes
- tuition and housing
- all meals
- international heath insurance coverage
The program cost does not include airfare, or any personal travel or expenses. Hollins students are billed for this program with their spring term bill, which is issued on December 1 and due on January 1.
Application Process
Students applying to this program must also complete an application with Spanish Studies Abroad. Their application is due
on October 15. Student may wish to start and submit their SSA application alongside the Hollins application.
Transatlantic Transportation
Participants make their own round-trip travel arrangements to Havana. You should book a flight that leaves on the afternoon or evening before your date of arrival. As this is a holiday period, we recommend that you book your flight as early as possible.
